Introduction Spam is flooding the Internet. Most spam is commercial advertising of dubious products, get rich quick schemes and illegal services. Spam costs money for ISPs and online services to transmit and these costs are reflected directly to the end-users. Millions of dollars are spent every year on research and development of spam filtering tools but filtering spam is not the ultimate solution against spam. We must take countermeasures to protect ourselves and at the same time drive spammers' efforts totally useless to make them stop sending spam. So, how? Spammers create their mailing lists using spambots that crawl the Web looking for email addresses; jumping from a link to another, page to page, site to site. This page generates fake email addresses for spambots(harvesters) to follow, suck and store in their databases. With the increasing number of bogus email addresses they collect everyday, spammers will have very hard times to filter real ones out. What they will end up is a database full of fake email addresses to send their replica watch and death-pill ads to. We can slow down spammers and even stop most of them in the long run! How to contribute There are two ways. 1. Simply add a link to antispamcoalition.org wherever you can and spread the word. Click here for text links and banner graphics. 2. Host and run our fake email generator script on your site. If you are a webmaster, this method is recommended. Just upload the files to your server and add a link to the script page. Detailed instructions included in the README file. Requires PHP 4.2 and above. Click here to download the zipped files. About the email addresses that the script generates In order to greatly decrease the probability of creation of real email addresses, words do contain at least 8 characters. This is to protect owners of short domainnames. ie: info@ab12.com will never be generated. Basic rules to avoid and minimize spam Spammers use special programs that extract email addresses from Web sites and Usenet postings. To avoid ending on a spammer's mailing list when you post to a Web forum or a newsgroup, you can obscure your email address by inserting something obvious into it. For example: modify myname@mydomainname.com to read myname@mydom[remove-this]ainname.com Do NOT reply to spam messages ever, even when they entice you to reply to "remove" you from their mailing lists. Replying will verify your email address as valid and your address will be permanently added to their list and sold to more spammers. Remove your email address from your website's pages and provide a web based mail form instead. Make sure your email address is only contained in the form processing script. Use Javascript to hide your email address from spambots. You can copy and modify the code below to paste into your pages. Only modify "string1" and "string3" values to reflect your email address info.
